Level 2 Certificate in Brush Cutting Operations (ABC02)

This is a practical assessment covering the operation of a strimmer, brush cutter or clearing saw. It includes pre-use checks and maintenance, identification of controls and instruments and operating the machine to remove brush, long grass or small trees as appropriate to the machine. The certificate is endorsed according to the type of machine being used.

The assessment is divided in to 4 units:
Unit 1. Maintain the Brush Cutter/Clearing Saw/ Trimmer (Mandatory)
Unit 2. Operate a Brush Cutter
Unit 3. Operate a Clearing Saw
Unit 4. Operate a Trimmer

Candidate must be a minimum age of 16 or over.

The qualification may be endorsed either:
a) Brush Cutter And/Or b) Clearing Saw And/Or c) Trimmer
Candidates seeking assessment in ‘a)’ are assessed in Units 1 and 2.
Candidates seeking assessment in ‘b)’ are assessed in Units 1 and 3
Candidates seeking assessment in ‘c)’ are assessed in Units 1 and 4.

Candidates must successfully achieve all assessment activities in the units they have elected to take.

-Legal and safety requirements
-Pre-start checks and correct selection of equipment for the tasks involved
-Statutory guard requirements
-Material to be cut and correct use of the equipment
-Speed of blade/nylon cord
-Safety of the public and bystanders
-Cleaning, maintenance and storage of the equipment
-Fitting the nylon card to a trimmer
-Correct adjustment of harness and machine
-Safe lifting and handling
-Identification of hazards and erecting barriers to safeguard the public
-Removal, sharpening and replacement of brush cutter/ clearing saw blade.
